ANTSHOW Madagascar Activity Report 2003

One of the highlights of the month was on the 21st of June. The day is called Fête de la Musique and a lot of musical events are supposed to happen in and around town on this date. We organised an open day concert at Antshow. We had more than we could handle in preparing for the concert day. We built a brand new wooden stage and 27 local groups were there, playing one after the other. It was amazing because the groups did not want to leave the centre even after their part was finished. We also made a discovery of a very talented all male vocal group which was still singing in the traditional style of vakisova. They were the stars of the day.

The US Embassy in Antananarivo was kind enough to lend us their video projector for the day so we also took that opportunity to show the recently made BBC film called Mad Rhythms Of Madagascar simultaneously with its release in Britain. A lot of people who never had the opportunity to travel around Madagascar were very impressed by what they saw on the film. Since we did not have any money or funding for this event, we offered drinks to everybody and had to stop at 5pm.
